Words of Wisdom, Part II

"Writing is another powerful strategy that promotes discovery, comprehension, and retention of information. In recent years, teachers have begun to use the writing process and its various phases as an integral part of their content-area classrooms. They have found that writing helps students clarify their thoughts and remember what they have learned... Recent research has supported the use of writing in content areas by showing that students who write tend to understand more and remember more." Wow. Really.

I think we should get my JTE a copy of this book. She could learn something.

You'll both be shocked to learn that the writing of papers, essays, etc., has been, since the 60s, often ridiculed in educational circles because that type of writing did not have a practical application. Writing as a purely functional skill (filling out applications, writing checks...), or as an expression of one's inner angst (especially among angst-ridden adolescents) were viewed as more acceptable applications of the skill. I actually found this quote refreshing, if self-evident :)
